Understanding the Bowel Preparation Process
The most important part of a successful colonoscopy or CT colonography is the "bowel prep." For the doctor to see the colon lining clearly, it must be completely empty of stool.
This usually involves a clear liquid diet (water, broth, plain gelatin) for 24 hours followed by drinking a strong laxative solution. While often described as the most difficult part of the screening, a "good prep" is essential; if the colon is not clean, polyps can be missed, and the procedure may have to be repeated.
